Creative national costume

Miss Thailand 2010, Fonthip ``Pukluk'' Watcharatrakul, is now back in Thailand after her successful run at the Miss Universe 2010 Pageant final at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas. Though she didn't win the crown, she did come back with two titles _ viewers' choice and best national costume.

If you've been following the pageant over past years, you'll have noticed that the national costume event is no longer limited to traditional concepts of each country's national dress, which went out with Porntip Nakhirunkanok when she won best national costume _ and went on to win the crown _ at the Miss Universe pageant in 1988.The national costumes event is now open to creative interpretation, and designers love this category.Pukluk's costume was named ``Siam Aiyara'', deriving from the elephant that is a symbol of Thailand. The design drew inspiration from the ceremonial costume of a royal elephant combined with the costume of a court lady during the reign of King Chulalongkorn. The Thai silk pantaloons were fitted at the calves, and worn with white stockings and a flowing shoulder cloth. The fitted blouse had one puffed sleeve that resembled the ear of an elephant, while a gold fan in her other hand represented the other ear.The most outstanding part of the costume was the headdress, which resembled an elephant's trunk. It stood out from most of the other national costumes; from Miss USA's golden eagle costume with golden wings, Miss Puerto Rico in her ``green canopy'' costume, Miss Belgium's tennis ensemble or Miss Switzerland's red warrior princess. Can't wait to see what's in store for next year.
